Snake with foot found in China

Snake with foot found in China

Dean Qiongxiu, 66, said she discovered the reptile clinging to the wall of her bedroom with its talons in the middle of the night.

"I woke up and heard a strange scratching sound. I turned on the light and saw this monster working its way along the wall using his claw," said Mrs Duan of Suining, southwest China.

Mrs Duan said she was so scared she grabbed a shoe and beat the snake to death before preserving its body in a bottle of alcohol.

The snake – 16 inches long and the thickness of a little finger – is now being studied at the Life Sciences Department at China's West Normal University in Nanchang.

Snake expert Long Shuai said: "It is truly shocking but we won't know the cause until we've conducted an autopsy."

A more common mutation among snakes is the growth of a second head, which occurs in a similar way to the formation of Siamese twins in humans.

Such animals are often caught and preserved as lucky tokens but have very little chance of surviving in the wild anyway, especially as the heads have a tendency to attack each other.

Black Cat found with four ears

Black Cat found with four ears

The household pet, named Yoda, was born with an extra set of ears. Valerie and Ted Rock took him in two years ago after visiting a bar near their home in Chicago, where he was being passed round by curious drinkers. He was one of a large litter and the owners were looking for a home for him.

The couple immediately fell for the freaky feline and asked the owner if they could adopt him. He agreed and the couple named the cat Yoda, after the pointy-eared Jedi knight in Star Wars.

Valerie, 65, said: 'We were at a pub on the south side of Chicago with a group of friends when we noticed a small cage sitting on the bar and people passing around a kitten. 'He had been part of a large litter and the owners were looking to find a home for him. 'Ted and I had just lost a cat that was our pet for over 20 years, and we were sure we were done with cats. 'When he was passed around he reached for Ted, crawled up into the crook of his neck and fell asleep - Ted was a goner. 'It was a done deal when the kitten made himself at home on Ted's shoulder.

We decided to name him Yoda. I understand the Star Wars character was based on George Lucas' cat.'

After adopting the eight-week-old kitten into their Illinois home, Valerie decided to have Yoda checked out with the local vet. Valerie Rock and Yoda the four-eared cat.

'The vet had never seen anything like it before,' explains Valerie. 'He immediately went to the internet and found the four-eared cat in Germany. 'We have spoken with other vets in our acquaintance, and they likewise had never encountered anything like this.

'We began to realise that we had something very special.'As a result, he has been an indoor cat and has a chip installed in case he gets lost. Yoda is so different that we were concerned that he might be catnapped.'

Yoda's extra 'flaps' are separate to the base of his skull, with one placed slightly behind the other.Yet despite his unusual looks, Valerie is sure Yoda's behaviour - and hearing - are quite normal. 'Yoda's hearing is normal as far as we know,' says Valerie. 'People do a double take when they see him or his picture. It is great fun showing him off.

Tangled up in love: The two elephants met each other in the middle of the Chobe River, which runs between Namibia and Botswana

Can anyone recall the old playground trick to sneakily get out of agreeing if a lover said the fateful words, 'I love you'?

The best thing to do would be to silently say 'elephant juice', as it looked identical to you mouthing: 'I love you, too.'

Try it in the mirror. Anyway, that's seamlessly introduced this wonderful set of photographs of two African elephants who really DO look as though they love each other.
The two elephants met each other in the middle of the Chobe River, which runs between Namibia and Botswana

Here a Savannah elephant from Namibia met another from Botswana at the Chobe River, which runs between the two countries.

And photographer Eric Webber sat in a boat just 20 feet away as the Namibian elephant swam to the middle of the river using his trunk as a snorkel.

The Botswanan elephant waded in to join his neighbour for a play fight, which ended in the two animals getting their trunks in a tangle.

Mr Webber said: 'We took a late afternoon boat ride on the Chobe River, which separates Namibia and Botswana, mostly looking at hippos and crocodiles, plus a lot of birds.

'We stopped at a bend in the river when we saw a group of eight to ten elephants on the Botswana shore.

'We watched them for a while until all but one wandered off.

'At the same time, we noticed a lone elephant on the Namibian side of the river.

'He walked to the riverbank, casual but deliberate, it seemed, waded in and eventually began swimming across, using his trunk like a snorkel.'

The Texas-based photographer continued: 'The other elephant, a slightly larger juvenile male, seemed to be waiting on the Botswana shore, every so often lifting his trunk and sniffing the air.

'They were both ignoring us and we drifted to within about 20 feet of them.

'They sniffed each other briefly and then entwined trunks.

'Our guide explained that this was a way for elephants, especially younger elephants, to greet each other - kind of like a handshake.

'It's also a playful game and they both seemed to enjoy it, wrapping and unwrapping their trunks, tugging a little but not much.

'They did that a few times and then headed up the bank together and disappeared into the bush.

'You also know that however gentle they seem, that could change very quickly, which certainly adds to the excitement of being around them.'

Monkey Who Adopts Kitten

A long tailed macaque monkey adopts a kitten in the forests of Bali, Indonesia

A young long tailed macaque monkey has been spotted in a forest protectively nuzzling and grooming a ginger kitten and making sure no harm came to it. The extraordinary sight was captured by amateur photographer Anne Young while on holiday at the Monkey Forest Park, in the Ubud region of Bali, Indonesia.

During the remarkable moments the monkey would become agitated if Anne ventured too near to take pictures and at one point used a huge leaf to try and cover the kitten from view

The monkey was even wary of other macaques and would not allow other young males to get too close

Throughout the session the kitten enjoyed the attention being lavished on it by its protective carer and made no effort to leave.

The reserve is inhabited by about 340 monkeys in four groups. It is considered sacred by locals and visited by about 10,000 tourists each month
