Chocolate might be not available in coming years

Chocolate might be not available in coming years
The world is facing a chocolate drought, an expert has warned.

The warning is prompted by fears that the world's supply of sustainable cocoa could run out by 2014.

Political unrest in the Ivory Coast, where 40 per cent of the world's cocoa beans are grown, has 'significantly' depleted the number of certified fair trade cocoa farmers.

Many have fled the West -African country, while fair trade training programmes have also come to a halt.

The situation is already affecting chocolate manufacturers, who are facing the highest cocoa prices for over 30 years.

Prices jumped by 10 per cent this month alone. Analysts are predicting they could soon hit 3,720 dollars per metric tonne-a level last seen in January 1979.

Angus Kennedy, the editor of Kennedy's Confection and a leading British chocolatier, said chocolate producers are facing "one of the biggest challenges to hit the industry in recent history."

"Supplies of sustainable cocoa are set to run out, it's that simple," the Daily Mail quoted him as saying.

"The Ivory Coast is a complete no-go area for cocoa traders as it's too dangerous, so training new farmers and trying to cut problems in the region is now, mostly impossible.

"So in effect, its sustainability is not sustainable. Prices can't go up as it's reported because there basically isn't enough certified cocoa left to sell," he said.

Even if the political situation improves, it could take three years or more for the number of certified fair-trade farmers to reach its former level.

According to Kennedy, manufacturers are now fighting for the rest of the world's sustainable cocoa bean stock.

In the Gippsland Lakes in Australia bioluminescence is a very unique, beautiful, and rare phenomenon that results from a chain of events such as flash floods, storms, and bushfires that triggers a population explosion of one particular type of algae.

It is very strange to observe and might make the observer think that were being invaded by another extraterrestrial species

Devils Tower found at Wyoming, USA

One of the most spectacular natural creation, the Devils Tower (also called Mato Tipila, which means “Bear Lodge”), is a monolithic igneous intrusion of volcanic rock located in the Black Hillsin Crook County, northeastern Wyoming, above the Belle Fourche River. It rises dramatically 386 meter above the surrounding terrain and the summit is 1,558 meter above sea level.

Devils Tower found at Wyoming, USA

Geologists believe that the tower is the eroded remains of a large mass of igneous rock poking through a layer of overlying sedimentary rock beds. As rain and snow continue to erode the sedimentary rocks surrounding the Tower's base, more of Devils Tower will be exposed.

The tower itself has been eroded over the ages. Portions, or even entire columns, of rock at Devils Tower are continually breaking off and falling. Piles of broken columns, boulders, small rocks, and stones lie at the base of the tower, indicating that it was once wider than it is today.

Weird Train Graveyard in Bolivia

Located some 3 km outside the trading town of Uyuni, in southwest Bolivia, lies an antique train cemetery. In the past, Uyuni was an important transport junction, connecting key cities in the region, but plans to turn the town into an even greater railway hub died an early death.

train-graveyard1
Construction on the network was started in 1888. It was encouraged by the then Bolivian President Aniceto Arce, who believed Bolivia would flourish with a good transport system, but it was also constantly sabotaged by the local Aymara indigenous Indians who saw it as an intrusion into their lives. The trains were mostly used by the mining companies. But in the 1940s, when the mining industry collapsed, partly due to the mineral depletion, many trains were abandoned thereby producing the train cemetery.

Sand Sculpture Exhibition In Melbourne

International sand sculpture artists from around the world teamed up with their Australian counterparts at the annual Sandsculpting Exhibition on the Frankston waterfront in Melbourne. The theme this year is Creepy Crawlies. From beetles, bugs and butterflies, to spiders, slugs and scorpions, the tiny creatures that inhabit our lives were magnified and amplified a thousand times in giant sand sculptures.

The exhibition will be open to the public until April, 2011.

Hedda Morrison Tremendous Photographs of Republican China

Hedda Morrison was a tremendous resource for images from the latter part of the Republican China years, photographing extensively with a 2 1/4 Rolleiflex Twin Lens (my personal roll film favorite) during her 13 year stay in China (from 1933 - 1946). Coincidentally, she then married into the family of and bears the name of another very famous China photographer; she married George Ernest Morrison\’s son, Alastair in 1946. Besides photography in China, she was also known for a large body of image work in Malaysia and Australia (where she died in 1991). Her husband, generously donated her life\’s work, divided between Harvard University and Australia\’s Power House Museum of Science & Design. All images were found on Harvard Universitys VIA (Visual Information Access) Search Engine. Minor spot and scratch touch up, contrast and tonal adjustments in an almost technically perfect image. Sepia added and then a false duotone.

Black Cat found with four ears

Black Cat found with four ears

The household pet, named Yoda, was born with an extra set of ears. Valerie and Ted Rock took him in two years ago after visiting a bar near their home in Chicago, where he was being passed round by curious drinkers. He was one of a large litter and the owners were looking for a home for him.

The couple immediately fell for the freaky feline and asked the owner if they could adopt him. He agreed and the couple named the cat Yoda, after the pointy-eared Jedi knight in Star Wars.

Valerie, 65, said: 'We were at a pub on the south side of Chicago with a group of friends when we noticed a small cage sitting on the bar and people passing around a kitten. 'He had been part of a large litter and the owners were looking to find a home for him. 'Ted and I had just lost a cat that was our pet for over 20 years, and we were sure we were done with cats. 'When he was passed around he reached for Ted, crawled up into the crook of his neck and fell asleep - Ted was a goner. 'It was a done deal when the kitten made himself at home on Ted's shoulder.

We decided to name him Yoda. I understand the Star Wars character was based on George Lucas' cat.'

After adopting the eight-week-old kitten into their Illinois home, Valerie decided to have Yoda checked out with the local vet. Valerie Rock and Yoda the four-eared cat.

'The vet had never seen anything like it before,' explains Valerie. 'He immediately went to the internet and found the four-eared cat in Germany. 'We have spoken with other vets in our acquaintance, and they likewise had never encountered anything like this.

'We began to realise that we had something very special.'As a result, he has been an indoor cat and has a chip installed in case he gets lost. Yoda is so different that we were concerned that he might be catnapped.'

Yoda's extra 'flaps' are separate to the base of his skull, with one placed slightly behind the other.Yet despite his unusual looks, Valerie is sure Yoda's behaviour - and hearing - are quite normal. 'Yoda's hearing is normal as far as we know,' says Valerie. 'People do a double take when they see him or his picture. It is great fun showing him off.
